De Genova Calls for Inclusive Ballot in Vision Vancouver Nomination Campaign
Vancouver, BC - (March 28, 2008) - As Vision Vancouver prepares to hold a nominating convention to decide who the party's Mayoral candidate will be, Al De Genova is asking the party to ensure an inclusive, fair and coherent process is in place on the day of voting.

"We need a multilingual ballot so that all of Vancouver's diverse communities can be involved in this exciting process and so that everyone has a clear understanding of the choices before them. We also need to have a preferential ballot where Vision Vancouver's members can state their first, second and third choice on one ballot," said De Genova.

Nomination meetings are often more spectacle than transparent democratic process. As a new party, Vision Vancouver has an opportunity to move beyond the smoke filled rooms and arm twisting that have frequently characterized competitive races.

Talking about his vision for how the nomination should be managed De Genova went on to say, "with a preferential ballot we can be sure that working families, seniors and all the citizens who want to be involved in building this party and building the democratic process in the city can take part in choosing a Mayoral candidate. With one vote, people can cast their ballot and then get on with their busy lives without having to wait out multiple ballots and the chaos and conflict that far too often come with old style politics. With our new party, let's do things in a new and better way."

"Finally, because this is such a competitive race, it is critical that Vision Vancouver appoint a Chief Electoral Officer or some other neutral party to oversee the entire process. Everything from advance polls, if there are any, to vote counting and redistribution on the day of the vote - all of this needs to be professionally and neutrally managed so that all the campaigns and their supporters can have absolute confidence every step of the way", De Genova concluded.

Vision Vancouver's governing body is currently making decisions about how, when and where the nomination will take place. Mr. De Genova looks forward to working closely with the party and with the other candidates toward a transparent, democratic and fair nomination.
