Al’s ability to cut through red tape and bring numerous levels of government
together in solving issues resulted in major improvements for Chinatown including:
new energy efficient lamp standards throughout the district that reduced consumption
dramatically; an extensive banner seasonal
program; free shuttle bus service from Vancouver’s downtown to Chinatown/Gastown in the summer; the creation of a 1,000 car parking garage; and the creation of the
Chinatown Historic Planning Committee that successfully worked on creative solutions helping businesses upgrade old buildings while keeping assessments down. Al
chaired this committee for three years. |
