Many Chinatown businesses, property owners and colleagues encouraged Al to take
his natural abilities to public service. Al started by
joining the Non Partisan Association (NPA) in 1990 and threw his hat in the political
ring in 1993 when he ran successfully for the Vancouver Park Board where he has
now served for fifteen years. In his time as a Park Commissioner, Al has spearheaded
countless projects, with highlights including: creation of the Il Giardino Italiano
at Hastings Park; the restoration of Victory Square; the community orchards and
community garden programs; saving Nat Bailey Stadium; the annual Inner-City Youth
Golfing Program; the development of the Downtown waterfront parks and recreation
facilities; and the Renewal of the Jewel fundraising campaign and Global TV Telethon
which subsequently raised millions of dollars for Stanley Park following a devastating
windstorm in December 2006. |
