Al's service to his community started when he was 19. He and Wendy heard through
the media that vandals had cut down a large tree, decorated in all it's Christmas
finery, in front of the BC Paraplegic Association building on Southwest Marine Drive.
Al
drove his old Mazda to the nearest nursery, purchased a large root-balled
fir, strings of lights, extension cords and decorations and made his way back to
the scene of the crime. He dug out the root ball of the former tree, planted the
new one, and with Wendy’s artistic touch, decorated the tree, plugged it in and
voila! By this time it was after working hours but Al had to share his excitement
so he called the emergency number listed on the front door of the building. MLA
Doug Mowat answered the call and wanted to meet the enthusiastic young man who would take so much trouble to right a wrong. So began a friendship that spanned decades.
It was just the beginning of many such acts of kindness and concern.
